Buzz Bissinger Responds to Peter Berg, Caitlyn Jenner ESPY Critics: Americans Are "Too Quick to Condemn"
Bissinger says Jenner is "an inspiration to all of us who struggle with difference."
Buzz Bissinger, the author of Caitlyn Jenner's Vanity Fair cover story, isn't taking kindly to the widespread criticism of Jenner's Arthur Ashe Courage Award at Wednesday's ESPYs.
"Caitlyn Jenner gave a heartfelt and powerful speech. She was obviously humbled and honored," Bissinger said in an email to The Hollywood Reporter. "She is an inspiration to all of us who struggle with difference and that includes me."
"American society is all too quick to condemn and humiliate," he added.
Ever since Jenner was announced as the courage award recipient, there have been people criticizing the decision to honor her, with criticism intensifying as Jenner accepted the award Wednesday evening.
Director Peter Berg, who happens to be Bissinger's cousin, shared a meme about Jenner that many people are calling transphobic. "One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs," the meme read.
"I love Pete," said Bissinger. "I am not in the business of censoring his comments nor he mine. He said what he believes, rare to begin with and unheard of in Hollywood where disingenuous discourse is the universal traffic."
The driver in the fatal car crash Jenner was involved in also weighed in against the reality star, saying Jenner shouldn't be honored after taking a life.
