Jon Steinberg announced that he was stepping down from his post at BuzzFeed in May.

Jon Steinberg, the former COO and president of BuzzFeed who left the post in May, has been appointed North American CEO at MailOnline, the web property for United Kingdom-based newspaper Daily Mail, which has established a growing audience in the United States.

Steinberg will be based in New York and will report to MailOnline publisher Martin Clarke.

"It's amazing that MailOnline is already America's second biggest newspaper site and has such fantastic reach — thanks to our unbeatable editorial," Clarke said. "But we are still only really getting started in terms of the opportunities we see for expansion, both in editorial and advertising and across new technology platforms. Jon is the perfect person to lead the charge as we grow and mature as a product in the U.S. and also to help us expand globally."

Steinberg had been at BuzzFeed for nearly four years when he announced his departure. An email to employees at the time noted that he would join BuzzFeed investor Lerer Ventures as an adviser.

"MailOnline's big American audience is formidable, and over the past couple of years, they have made a major investment in their U.S. editorial and business teams," Steinberg said. "Martin and the company's plans to double down on this success with more investment in world news, video, and mobile/social technology are thrilling. And I look forward to helping them do just that."
