Outdoor Channel Holdings has named former ESPN CEO Roger Werner president of the company and CEO of its cable network.

Werner takes the reins from Perry Massie, who had served as president, CEO and chairman of the company and co-president of The Outdoor Channel. Massie will remain acting chairman of OCH.

The company also appointed Werner to its board of directors.

After having served as a consultant to ESPN for three years, Werner was named COO of the sports net in 1982. During Werner's tenure, ESPN landed cable's first NFL contract and enjoyed almost unparalleled growth.

After leaving ESPN for a brief stint as executive vp of the ABC Television Network Group, Werner rejoined the net from 1988 to 1990 as president and CEO.

An entrpreneur, Werner developed a number of regional sports networks during the 1990s, and helped launched the ventures formerly known as Outdoor Life Network and Speedvision.

In December 2005, Werner joined the Internet TV company Narrowstep as a special consultant.
