California's Prop 8 Ruled Unconstitutional: Hollywood Sounds Off
Several public figures took to Twitter with their reaction to the federal appeals court’s decision on the same-sex marriage ban.
“BREAKING NEWS! #Prop8 ruled unconstitutional!!! Hold on, Twitter is about to go CRAZY!!!” Late Show with David Letterman head writer and producer, Justin Stangel, rightly predicted.
On the heels of Tuesday’s decision by a federal appeals court, which found California’s same-sex marriage ban, Proposition 8, unconstitutional, Hollywood took to their twitter accounts to express their reaction to the news.
Dustin Lance Black, the writer and filmmaker whose biographical film, Milk, helped stoke passionate debate on Prop 8. is a founding member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights. AFER sponsors the federal court case to overturn Prop 8, and Black took to Twitter to express his joy.
“With our beautiful plaintiffs now,” Black writes. “Hugs and cheers as the 9th circuit court of appeals affirmed that Proposition 8 is unconstitutional!”
A celebratory tweet from Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson prompted funny girl Niecy Nash to reply along with her picture from the NO H8 campaign, which was founded to put a face on the many opponents to the constitutional amendment passed in 2008.
“Historic! #Prop8 is unconstitutional,” Ferguson tweeted. “@AFER & I won’t stop until ALL Americans are #free2marry. Sign> http://bit.ly/pledge8 & RT”
To which Nash wrote, “I love u friend:)”
On the other hand, conservative blogger, political commentator, and author Michelle Malkin voiced her disappointment in the court simply writing, “Lib 9th circuit has declared California's Proposition 8 unconstitutional...” and retweeting follower @arizonashane’s tweet: “@michellemalkin Given the opportunity, the 9th Circus would strike down the Constitution as unconstitutional.”
