The drama, the cable net's second original to score a sophomore pickup this year, is based on a book series of the same name by Janette Oke.

The Hallmark Channel is happy with its first slate of original dramas. The network has renewed When Calls the Heart, which joins fellow scripted offering Cedar Cove in earning a sophomore season.

From Believe Pictures and Brad Krevoy Television production, When Calls the Heart has been averaging a 1.5 rating among households since its Jan. 11 premiere. The network estimates that it has been seen by an unduplicated audience of 12.3 million viewers.

When Calls the Heart is based on a book series of the same name by Janette Oke and stars Lori Loughlin, Erin Krakow and Daniel Lissing.

"The success of When Calls the Heart proves the show fills the niche of quality, family-friendly entertainment that audiences want to see in today's crowded television landscape," said network programming executive vp Michelle Vicary. "The overwhelming wave of support from the show's legion of fans tells us that they have fallen in love with its great storytelling, and we are thrilled to have it continue."

Hallmark Channel recently debuted an original titled Signed, Sealed, Delivered and also ordered a series based on its popular Good Witch telepics.
