Canada’s Entertainment One Plans Big European TV Drive to Bolster Its Media Ambitions Outside North America
eOne Television International president Peter Emerson to relocate to British capital from Canada to spearhead plans.
LONDON --Canada’s Entertainment One has drawn up plans to expand its European TV operations and build its work with productions from outside of North America.
The company, with offices in Toronto and and expanding presence in the British capital, said it has concrete plans to direct “a greater portion of its $300 million annual investment in content to television projects originating from Europe.”
eOne’s current activities range from the financing, co-production, acquisition and distribution of film and television content worldwide.
But the statement of intent to bankroll European television production will be a fillip for tv companies here and across Europe.
The company is “actively looking to work with U.K. and European production companies on the development and production of new television projects – across the scripted, reality and concept, factual and format genres – to deliver to the global marketplace.”
Project financing will take the form of co-production, presales and/or acquisition of distribution rights.
Global distribution opportunities will be created through eOne’s access to its network of U.S. broadcast and cable network links.
eOne Television International president Peter Emerson will relocate to the group’s London office, tasked with driving the company’s growth in the U.K. and across the continent, indentifying suitable investment opportunities and new partners, and building on the company’s television slate.
“The opportunity to offer greater investment demonstrates our commitment to this market and our faith in U.K. and European content creators to produce quality TV content,” Emerson said.
“We are also offering a significant competitive advantage in a challenging funding environment, seeking out opportunities to get involved in television projects at an earlier stage and helping to put them together using our financial support.”
eOne’s roster of programming across North America currently includes Rookie Blue on ABC and Shaw, Briitsh preschool show Peppa Pig on Nick Jnr and The Walking Dead on AMC.
