Canada supplying satellite equipment

Providing access to Aboriginal Peoples net

TORONTO -- The Canadian government will supply native communities in the country's far north with satellite TV dishes and receivers so they can view the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network.

Ottawa will fund the CAN$9 million ($8.9 million) switch to satellite TV equipment in 92 northern communities so APTN will no longer have to maintain a network of costly, low-power, over-the-air transmitters.

The government deployment of satellite equipment is required as APTN must be carried in all Canadian households to promote awareness of native issues and culture.
