Canadian pay channels double 'Weight'

TORONTO -- Canadian premium pay TV channels the Movie Network and Movie Central on Thursday raised their order for "The Weight" from eight to 16 episodes, even before the Canadian drama debuts on air.

Toronto-based producer the Nightingale Co. said the pay TV channels doubled their order for the cop drama from the writing duo of George F. Walker and Dani Romain based on dailies from the first season, which started production in August.

"Here we are, in production for only two months, and we feel truly validated by the networks' decision to commit to a second season" of eight episodes, series producer Debbie Nightgale said.

The Canadian pay TV series stars Ron White (Screamers) and Daniel Kash (Cinderella Man) as two cops as damaged and morally ambiguous as the criminals they pursue.

The first season of "The Weight" is slated to bow on the Movie Network and Movie Central in fall 2008.

The cast for the Canadian series is rounded out by Sharon Lawrence, Linda Hamilton, Edward Asner and Cle Bennett.

Gail Harvey has the directors' credit on the TV drama, while Norman Denver is producing.
