Canal Plus picks 'Daisies'

CANNES -- "Pushing Daisies" will bloom on Canal Plus after the Gallic pay TV network acquired the ABC series to air in France in the fall.
"Daisies" follows Canal Plus' recent pickups of fellow ABC series "Dirty Sexy Money" and "Reaper."
Canal Plus is also hoping to bridge the gap between France and the U.K. with several new British series, including Alchemy's miniseries "Diamonds," ITV's Granada-produced "My Boy Jack" and the BBC miniseries "Oliver Twist."
The network also announced the acquisition of German 110-minute production "Mogadiscio" produced by Teamworx-SperlSchott Films and Zen Prods.
Despite the pickups, Canal Plus new head of Cinema Manuel Alduy, who is also handling series acquisitions, said the MIPTV market has been relatively quiet for the group.
"The Hollywood strikes really hurt us," he said. "The studios have told us, 'We're running deep.' We're seeing unfinished scripts and synopses and improbable development ideas."
However, "compared to just a couple of years ago, we have much more original French fictions, so we're not worried," Alduy added.
