Canal Plus Unveils Lineup for New Channel
Many big shows will be broadcast hours after their U.S. debuts.
PARIS – French pay TV giant Canal Plus unveiled the lineup for its new channel Canal+Series with a programming slate that will include many major American shows broadcast just hours after their stateside debuts.
The channel will launch Sept. 21 with the first two episodes of Hannibal, which will be broadcast exclusively on the channel. The cannibal drama starring Cannes best actor winner Mads Mikkelsen is shown on NBC in the U.S.
Other U.S. hit dramas such as Revenge and Scandal will be shown within a day to a week of their U.S. broadcasts, in English with French subtitles. The new schedule will follow the American model of broadcasting one episode a week and follow various hiatuses or holiday breaks as they happen in the U.S.
New seasons of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, and Shameless will be shown on the same schedule, as well as first season runs of Banshee, Girls, The Americans and the now-defunct and somewhat unlucky Dustin Hoffman vehicle Luck. New seasons of old comedies will also play on the small screen, including The Big Bang Theory and the Charlie Sheen-less My Uncle Charlie, as Two and a Half Men is called here.
In keeping with French regulations, 60 percent of programming will be from Europe and 40 percent from within France. European co-productions such as the Denmark-Sweden mystery The Bridge and Norway-U.S. comedy Lilyhammer will bridge the gap. The U.K.’s Utopia and France’s homegrown ghost drama Les Revenants and comedy Working Girls will also air on the channel.
And for the binge-watcher who spends Sunday indoors with a season's worth of a favorite show, weekends will feature marathons of hits Homeland and Dexter as well as Working Girls.
The channel will be added on to all current subscribers' packages at no extra cost, joining Sport, Cinema and Family lineups. Subscribers will also find all of the shows on demand for a month after airing.
