Cannes 2012: Download THR's 'Daily' Guide to Cannes
In Day 3's issue, Relativity Media looks to buy Senator and Cate Blanchette and Mia Wasikowska join "The Price of Salt".
Today's stories from the Cannes Film Festival include:
Relativity Media Set to Buy Senator
Ryan Kavanaugh’s film financing group Relativity Media is close to a takeover of German producer-distributor Senator Entertainment. U.S. sources familiar with the deal told THR that Relativity is set to buy a controlling stake in Senator, most likely together with a third-party investor. The agreement is expected to be announced soon.
Blanchett Joins Salt
Cate Blanchette and Mia Wasikowska have been confirmed to star in the new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s novella Carol (aka The Price of Salt) by producers Stephen Woolley and Elizabeth Karlsen at Number 9 Films. John Crowley will direct from a script penned by Phyllis Nagy based on Highsmith’s story set in 1950s New York that follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women.
Jones Takes on Fleming
British director in demand Duncan Jones is signed to direct an action thriller based on James Bond creator Ian Fleming’s early life. Before becoming the best- selling author of the Bond books, Fleming traveled the globe and masterminded top-secret operations as a naval intelligence officer before and during World War II. The adventures helped inspire him in creating the famous Agent 007.
Alliance Takeover Talk Hits Cannes
As speculation mounts over the imminent sale of indie distribution powerhouse Alliance Films, the possibility Entertainment One might buy up its Canadian rival has the film exectives gathered in Cannes buzzing about how the deal would impact both companies and the industry as a whole.
