Cannes: Belgium’s Umedia Boards Nicholas Hoult-Starrer ‘Sand Castle’
Umedia will co-finance, executive produce and handle international sales on the Iraqi war drama. Mark Gordon will produce and Seb Edwards will direct in his feature debut.
Belgium film group Umedia, backers on Cannes Film Festival opening-night film Grace of Monaco, has come on board Sand Castle, the upcoming Iraqi War drama starring Nicholas Hoult.
Umedia, which will take an executive producer credit on the feature, will also handle international sales on Sand Castle and will be pitching the project to buyers in Cannes next week.
Produced by Mark Gordon (Source Code, Saving Private Ryan), Sand Castle is based on real-life events surrounding a young machine gunner and his platoon, who are sent on a mission to repair an aqueduct in the dangerous and remote village of Baqubah, Iraq. Toby Kebbell (War Craft) also stars.
Commercials director Seb Edwards will make his feature debut helming Sand Castle. The script, from Chris Roessner, made the 2012 Black List.
Said Adrian Politowski, CEO of Umedia: “Sand Castle is an amazing and gripping story transcending the genre into a powerful coming-of-age tale. Combining that quality with Mark Gordon producing, Seb directing and Nicholas Hoult starring, as well as our production partners working with the Umedia teams, this will yield an outstanding and important film.”
Shooting is set to start in October in South Africa and Italy. CAA, which arranged financing, is repping North American rights to Sand Castle on behalf of the producer and filmmaker.
Hoult is repped by UTA in the U.S. and 42 in the U.K.; Kebbell by CAA; Roessner by CAA, Management 360 and Ziffren Brittenham; and Edwards by CAA and Bloom Hergott Diemer Rosenthal LaViolette Feldman Schenkman & Goodman in the U.S. and Independent Talent in the U.K.
