Cannes: Download THR's Day 7 Daily

The fest's awards contenders so far, the craze of cannibal movies and Laura Poitras on her new Julian Assange doc.

The Hollywood Reporter's seventh Cannes Film Festival daily issue includes a summary of the fest's awards contenders so far, a look at the craze of cannibal movies and a chat with Laura Poitras about her new Julian Assange documentary.

Awards Buzz Begins
The eventual Palme D’Or winner could go to the German comedy Toni Erdmann, Ken Loach's I, Daniel Blake or Jim Jarmusch’s Paterson, but for those looking to Cannes as a launching platform for Oscar contenders, the pickings have been slim — until, that is, the first press screening on Monday of Jeff Nichols’ new film, Loving. The 37-year-old director is no stranger to the Croisette (2011's Take Shelter, 2012’s Mud), but Loving could take him to the next level, awards-wise.

Eating Up Cannibalism
No fewer than five films screening at the fest feature cannibal themes, including Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon and Bruno Dumont’s Slack Bay, both of which are in competition. Why are so many filmmakers sinking their teeth into the cannibalism concept this year? Insiders tell THR that it reflects the reality of the widening gap between the haves and have-nots, thanks to hyper-capitalism and a culture of consumption.

"I'm Not Trying to Shape Public Opinion"
Laura Poitras' new documentary Risk is a portrait of whistleblowing’s original kingpin, Julian Assange, and his WikiLeaks team. The director tracks them following the first earth-shattering dump of Iraq War document leaks through to the ensuing legal scramble and the divisive hacktivist’s attempts to fight deportation from within the Ecuadorian embassy in London, where he has been living since 2012. Poitras discusses with THR the dangers of her job and how she hopes her latest feature will offer the accurate portrayal of Assange that has yet to be seen in the mainstream media.
