Cannes: Fox International Production Picks Up 'Mea Culpa' for U.S., Multiple Territories
FIP will also release the action thriller from French director Fred Cavaye in Germany and Latin America.
In another major deal for the ever-active Fox International Productions president Sanford Panitch, FIP has picked up rights in the U.S., Latin America and Germany for Mea Culpa, a French action thriller from director Fred Cavaye starring Vincent Lindon, Gilles Lellouche and Nadine Labaki.
Shebnem Askin, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions at FIP did the multi-territory deal with head of Gaumont International Cecile Gaget.
FIP snatched up the title just ahead of the Cannes market where Gaumont is unspooling exclusive footage of the film to select buyers. The French giant is co-producing Mea Culpa together with Jean-Baptiste Dupont and Cyril Colbeau-Justin at French shingle LGM Cinema.
Gaumont will bow the title in France and has pre-sold it to several territories including Canada (eOne), Spain (A Contra Corriente) and South Korea (Focus & Cie).
Mea Culpa is the story of two French cops: Franck (Lellouch) and Simon (Lindon), long-time partners, whose lives are thrown into disarray after Simon, driving drunk, causes a tragic car accident and leaves the force.
Years later, when his family is under threat from the mafia, Simon takes matters into his own hands, forcing him to reteam with his former partner.
Mea Culpa is the third feature from genre master Cavaye following on the heels of Anything For Her (2008), remade as The Next Three Days by Paul Haggis and Point Blank (2010), which Leverage and Working Title have picked up for an English-language remake.
“Fred Cavaye is one of the most talented new directors working today who manages to elevate the thriller genre to a new level with each film,” said Askin. “We are excited to work with him on Mea Culpa and we're looking forward to finding more projects to work together in the future."
Budgeted at $20 million, Mea Culpa is set to bow in France early next year.
