Ex Machina breakout Alicia Vikander will star in the tech world drama-thriller The Circle alongside Tom Hanks.
The suddenly red-hot actress, who will star in six movies over the next nine months, including Warner Bros.' The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl opposite Eddie Redmayne, is attached to play the film's protagonist.
Based on Dave Eggers' 2013 novel, the story centers on a recent college graduate (Vikander) who lands a job at a powerful tech company called The Circle, which is co-owned by a charismatic man (Hanks).
The project first came together in December, when Hanks and his Playtone production company became attached. In January, veteran indie producer Anthony Bregman (Begin Again, Foxcatcher) came onboard The Circle, giving it further momentum. On the eve of Cannes, Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, who together produced the Men in Black franchise and the Denzel Washington starrer Flight, also became attached in a financing capacity (they brought in their fund partners at Image Nation Abu Dhabi to fully finance). Hanks then firmed up his commitment to co-star (he recently starred in another Eggers-based book, A Hologram for the King).
IM Global is shopping The Circle to foreign buyers at the Cannes film market, which kicks off May 13. UTA, which reps Ponsoldt and Vikander, is handling domestic rights alongside CAA, which reps Hanks.
Playtone's Gary Goetzman also is producing The Circle with Hanks, Bregman and Ponsoldt.

Also on deck for Vikander is Derek Cianfrance's The Light Between Oceans and John Wells' culinary tale Adam Jones with Bradley Cooper as well as Sony Pictures Classics' Testament of Youth and Justin Chadwick's Tulip Fever. She is also on hand at Cannes as the "voice" of the late Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman in the documentary Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words.
