Cannes: Maika Monroe, Ed Skrein to Star in Sci-Fi Thriller 'Tau'
Federico D'Alessandro will direct the film that Bloom is selling in Cannes.
Maika Monroe and Ed Skrein will star in sci-fi thriller Tau, from director Federico D'Alessandro.
Monroe, the breakout star of It Follows, will play Julia, who has been kidnapped and held captive in a fatal experiment. She's being held hostage by TAU — an advanced artificial intelligence developed by her captor (Skrein) — that is armed with a battalion of drones that automate a futuristic smart house.
Waypoint Entertainment is financing the film in its first-look deal with Addictive Pictures. David S. Goyer and Kevin Turen will produce under their Phantom Four banner alongside Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder for Addictive Pictures while Ken Kao, Dan Kao and Luc Etienne will executive produce.
Bloom will handle international sales and is introducing the film to foreign buyers in Cannes, while WME is handling domestic rights.
“From the first moment Noga’s script made the Blacklist, we knew we wanted to be part of this special project,” said a statement from Goyer. “Federico’s vision for the film was one of the most assured director presentations I have ever seen. Our backing of these two new voices continues our commitment to emerging filmmakers. We want to thank Ken and the Waypoint team for helping us bring this exciting story to life."
After her critically praised work in horror film It Follows, Monroe will next be seen in Peter Landesman’s Felt, starring Liam Neeson, and Roland Emmerich's sequel Independence Day: Resurgence. She’s repped by WME, Luber Roklin Entertainment and Felker Toczek.
Skrein recently co-starred in Fox's hit superhero movie Deadpool, and was also seen in Kill Your Friends, with Nicholas Hoult, and The Transporter Refueled. He’s repped by CAA, 42 and Bloom Hergott.
