The only Chinese movie in the Cannes Film Festival's official selection this year, 'Walking Past the Future' is a gritty drama set in contemporary China.

Paris-based movie powerhouse MK2 Films has acquired the French distribution rights to Walking Past the Future, the only Chinese film included in the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Screening in the Un Certain Regard section, the drama was directed by indie filmmaker Li Ruijun, whose previous movies Flying With the Crane and River Road premiered at Venice and Berlin, respectively.

The film follows Yaoting (Yang Zishan), the daughter of aging migrant workers living in the big city and trying to cope with the harsh realities of fast-changing contemporary China. With a dim hope of providing her family with a home of their own, Yaoting takes part in a series of high-paying medical experiments, with tragic consequences.

Walking Past the Future was produced by Beijing QiTai Ocean Cultures & Media Co., Edko (Beijing) Films, Irresistible Alpha, Edko Films, Pulin Production and Hucheng No. 7 Films.

MK2 acquired the rights from Edko Films, which is handling all international sales on Walking Past the Future in Cannes.
