Cannes: StudioCanal Partners With 'The Killing,' 'Borgen' Creators on TV Production Banner
Together with StudioCanal's operations in France, Germany and France, the Scandinavian outfit will produce high-end television drama for the international market.
French giant StudioCanal has set up a new production company in Scandinavia together with the creators of hit Danish dramas The Killing and Borgen and a producer of Lars von Trier's Melancholia.
The new operation, SAM Productions, takes its name from the first initials of its three founding members: The Killing creator Soren Sveistrup, Borgen creator Adam Price and Melancholia producer Meta Louise Foldager.
The outfit will work with top talent in the red-hot Scandinavian TV industry to develop and produce shows for the international market.
The move, which StudioCanal CEO Olivier Courson signposted during his keynote speech at international television confab MIPTV last month, will see the group add to its already extensive European television operation, which includes German shingle Tandem Communication, producer of crime procedural Crossing Lines and British group RED, producers of the original Queer as Folk and the BAFTA-winning series Last Tango in Halifax.
The structure of StudioCanal's new European television operations mirrors that of the group's film division, which has separate production and distribution operations in multiple territories which work independently but cooperate to co-finance and distribute bigger budget features.
For SAM, Canal+ Group will assist the talent in developing the content for broadcast on its channels. StudioCanal, meanwhile, will serve as the group's international distributor.
Sveistrup will create and write his own new TV projects, while also be executive producing other shows produced by SAM. "With SAM, we have got a unique creative and ambitious platform I expect a lot from," he said.
Adds Folger, who also produced the Oscar-nominated period drama A Royal Affair: ”In Scandinavia, we have a huge pool of extremely strong writing and directing talents… In order to facilitate and nurse this very fortunate talent situation, we need to finance, collaborate and distribute internationally. SAM has the ambition, structure and a group of owners that in my view, make a solid platform for doing so.”
