Cannes: 'The Tribe' Tops Critics' Week Awards

The film, featuring a cast entirely composed of deaf sign-language users, took home three awards.

As the Cannes Fim Festival winds down, the first of the weekend's awards were handed out Thursday night by the Critics’ Week sidebar, with The Tribe taking three awards.

The top prize, the €10,000 Grand Prix Nespresso, went to The Tribe by Ukranian director Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy. The film follows a deaf mute who enters a specialized boarding school, and the cast was entirely composed of deaf sign-language users.

The drama had a stellar night over all, taking two other awards. It earner the France 4 Visionary Award, which is awarded to a film that "reflects the passion and enthusiasm of promising young film critics for the new filmmakers of their generation."

The Gan Foundation Support for Distribution award also was given to The Tribe. The prize, from the Gan Foundation, is awarded to the French distributor of one of the seven feature films in competition. They receive €20,000 and in return they would have to come up with marketing strategies for the film, which will have to be released in France within the two following years.

Cannes Review: 'The Tribe'

The SACD award was given to Hope by Boris Lojkine. The jury for the SACD award is made up of filmmakers that are members of the board of directors of the SACD: Laurent Heynemann, Arthur Joffé, Jeanne Labrune and Jean Marboeuf. The film, which is set in the Sahara desert and follows a a young man from Cameroon who rescues a Nigerian woman, will receive a 4,000 euros prize.

Two short film prizes were also give out. The Sony CineAlta Discovery Prize was given to A Ciambra by Jonas Carpignano, a film about a young Romani boy living in southern Italy.

The Canal+ Award went to Crocodile by Gaëlle Denis, which follows a bereaved headmaster who fights a crocodile.
