CanWest grabs 'Power' for Canada

TORONTO -- As Drew Carey prepares for his new gig as host of "The Price is Right," Canadian broadcaster CanWest MediaWorks has acquired the other CBS game show he's hosting, "Power of 10. The show will air in primetime here beginning Aug. 7.

Toronto-based CanWest MediaWorks already airs "The Price is Right" on its CH network, and will now simulcast "Power of 10" with its CBS airdates south of the border. Contestants on the show earn cash prizes by predicting the American public's response to poll questions.

CanWest's addition of "Power of 10" to its schedule follows Global Television's success with NBC game shows like "Deal or No Deal" and "1 vs 100" and Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader."

Traditionally looking to U.S. primetime game shows to fill their schedules, Canadian broadcasters have been late to the game in developing their own homegrown versions of international formats.

CanWest MediaWorks is currently talking to Mark Burnett about airing a Canadian version of "Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader."
