CanWest in talks for '5th Grader'

TORONTO -- Canadian broadcaster CanWest Global Communications said Friday that it is holding talks with reality series producer Mark Burnett regarding a Canadian version of Fox's "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?"

A CanWest Global spokeswoman said no deal to produce a Canadian version of the Fox series has yet emerged from the discussions.

The talks follow Fox's "5th Grader," hosted by comic Jeff Foxworthy, doing big numbers for Global Television, one of two domestic networks CanWest Global runs in Canada.

CanWest Global last season hit ratings pay dirt when it partnered with Endemol USA and Canadian producer Insight Prods. to produce and air a Canadian version of NBC's "Deal or No Deal," with Toronto-born Howie Mandel hosting.

Staging Canadian versions of popular U.S. reality and variety shows airing here has proved popular with domestic broadcasters.

CTV and FremantleMedia already have partnered on "Canadian Idol" and rival broadcaster Chum is airing "Canada's Next Top Model" in partnership with CBS/Paramount.
