The 'Paper Towns' star also talks about her commitment to acting and wanting to play strong female characters, like her 'Suicide Squad' supervillain, who "kill[s] people with [her] bare hands."

British supermodel and Internet personality Cara Delevingne may have been a controversial choice for the role of Margo in the movie adaptation of John Green's Paper Towns.

Fans of the young adult book criticized casting a supermodel to play a girl described as "curvy," and Delevingne had few acting credits to her name when she was cast. She's since gone on to land roles in the highly anticipated Suicide Squad as well as Luc Besson's Valerian. She'll also appear in this fall's Peter Pan origin film Pan.

But Delevingne tells Time that she's always wanted to act and started modeling to pay for drama school and travel. She also dismisses those who don't take her commitment to acting seriously with the sort of uninhibited candor she's exhibited on social media and in public appearances.

"If anyone just thought I was trying to pad my résumé, they can suck my — boobs," she told Time, laughing.

She also recalled losing the titular role in Tim Burton's 2010 Alice in Wonderland to Mia Wasikowska, calling not getting the part she had her heart set on, auditioned for and met with Burton at his home about, "The worst rejection I’ve ever gotten.”

“I didn’t get over that for, like, three years," she told Time, explaining that she put her acting on hold because she was still in school and she didn't like what she was being offered.

“Everyone tried to typecast [me] as the dumb blond model or the girl who gets killed,” she says. “I take what roles I do very seriously. I always want to portray a strong female. Acting roles for women are usually less strong and, like, bleeding hearts.”

She decided to commit to acting, which she hopes to transition to full-time, after all of the attention she got for her success as a model caused her to develop psoriasis all over her body, she told Time.

Delevingne also teased her role in Suicide Squad, saying of her Enchantress character, “I kill people with my bare hands.”

Paper Towns hits theaters on July 24.
