'Carol' Trailer: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara Fall for Each Other, Endure Heartbreak

Director Todd Haynes' romantic drama premiered at Cannes and hits theaters Nov. 20.

Love is definitely not easy for the two leads in The Weinstein Co.'s upcoming drama Carol.

The film centers on Therese (Rooney Mara), a department-store clerk who begins to have feelings for an older, married woman (Cate Blanchett).

The two develop a romance, but things soon get complicated. A key scene in the trailer involves Carol informing Therese that her husband won't let her see their daughter if they end their marriage.

"We gave each other the most breathtaking of gifts," Carol tells Therese in an emotional exchange.

Kyle Chandler and Sarah Paulson co-star in director Todd Haynes' (Far From Heaven) film, which was adapted from a novel by Patricia Highsmith.

The film premiered at Cannes and hits theaters Nov. 20.
