In a foretaste of what’s ahead for Hollywood during the 2014 midterm elections, singer-songwriter Carole King will headline a fundraiser for Massachusetts senatorial candidate Ed Markey on March 24 at the Bel-Air mansion of Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn and his wife Cindy.

According to a "save the date" invitation obtained by The Hollywood Reporter, Cindy Horn is the evening’s host, and tickets to the event are priced at a hefty $5,200 to co-host and $2,600 per person to attend. Markey, who represents Massachusetts' 5th congressional district, is seeking the Democratic nomination to succeed Sen. John Kerry, recently appointed Secretary of State by President Barack Obama.

A special election to fill Kerry’s seat will be held June 25, but Markey first faces another Democratic congressman, Stephen Lynch, in an April 30 primary contest. According to the most recent polls, Markey -- Massachusetts’ longest serving federal lawmaker -- leads his rival 42 percent to 25 percent among registered Democrats, but the contest is neck-and-neck among the state’s “unenrolled” voters, who can vote in the open primary.

Hollywood Democrats turned out big time to support Elizabeth Warren’s successful Massachusetts senate bid in the general election just past and, like her, Markey is solidly in the party’s progressive wing. He has particularly strong credentials among Democrats concerned with the energy and environmental issues on which he’s focused most heavily.

He once suggested that global warming skeptics form their own country on an iceberg that had broken off from Greenland. He's also derided Tea Party members as being "allergic to science." And he was part of a small collation of House members who supported a measure seeking to disqualify Ohio's electoral votes in the 2004 presidential election because of voting machine problems. The move would have meant that Kerry had won the election.

Markey even has his own entertainment industry credentials: He had a cameo role as an officer of the Union Army’s Irish Brigade in the Civil War film Gods and Generals.
