Cary Fukunaga, A24 Developing Joe and Jadin Bell Movie
'Brokeback Mountain' writers Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana will pen the script.
Cary Fukunaga has signed on to direct and produce a film about father and son Joe and Jadin Bell, in what will be A24's first time developing a project from script to screen.
Brokeback Mountain writers Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana will write the script. The film is based on the true story of Jadin Bell, an openly gay 15-year-old who took his own life after being bullied at school and struggling for acceptance from the people closest to him. His father, Joe, attempted to work through his grief over his son's suicide by setting out on a walk across America, hoping to promote awareness of the consequences of prejudice to anyone he encountered along the way.
A24 is producing the film along with Fukunaga’s Parliament of Owls production banner, Daniela Taplin Lundberg and Riva Marker of Red Crown Productions, and Eva Maria Daniels of VisionChaos Productions. Daniel Crown of Red Crown will executive produce.
“Joe and Jadin Bell’s story is a poignant reminder of how precious life is, and a life-affirming example of love transcending the prejudice and victimization familiar to many,” said A24 in a statement. “Cary is a truly exceptional filmmaker. We are honored to help bring his vision of this incredible true story to screen. With the legendary talents of Larry and Diana writing the script, we have no doubt this will be a profoundly emotional and unforgettable film.”
Fukunaga is known for helming the first season of HBO's hit series True Detective, along with the film adaptation of Jane Eyre. He most recently directed the upcoming drama Beasts of No Nation, which was acquired by Netflix last month. He's repped by WME and Anonymous Content.
McMurtry and Ossana are the Oscar-winning team behind the script for Brokeback Mountain and are repped by UTA, Anonymous Content and attorneys Robert Thorne and Greg Redlitz.
