Casey Affleck has won the best actor award at the Oscars for his role in Manchester by the Sea

The actor was nominated alongside Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Ryan Gosling (La La Land), Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic) and Denzel Washington (Fences).

The award was presented by last year's best actress winner, Brie Larson.

"I'm really proud to be part of this community," said Affleck onstage, thanking his Manchester cast, "and I'm just so proud to be included."

He also thanked fellow nominee Denzel Washington, whom he says "taught me how to act."

This is the first Oscar win for Affleck, who was nominated once before for best supporting actor for his role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. He also won the Golden Globe this year for best actor for Manchester by the Sea, and won the best actor award Saturday at the Spirit Awards as well.

After winning the best actor award at yesterday’s Spirit Awards, Affleck addressed President Trump and his "un-American" stances. "The policies of this administration are abhorrent, and they won't last," he told the crowd.

In Manchester by the Sea, Affleck plays a man grieving over the death of his brother as he learns he is supposed to take care of his nephew. Leonardo DiCaprio won the best actor award at last year's Oscars ceremony for his role in The Revenant

The 89th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, were held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and aired on ABC.
