Cate Blanchett, Elisabeth Moss Give the Cold Shoulder

Though Alicia Vikander's shoulders were probably the coldest.

First introduced by Donna Karan via Hillary Clinton roughly 20 years ago, the "cold-shoulder" cutout trend is back in full swing for spring 2016.

Further proof of the trend's resurgence can be found on this week's red carpets, where Cate Blanchett, Elisabeth Moss and Alicia Vikander all wore varying degrees of the trend. Here, we break down their cold-shoulder looks from lukewarm to freezing.

Elisabeth Moss

Moss gave the tiniest hint of a cold shoulder in a bright red shift minidress by Osman at the Los Angeles premiere of Truth on Monday evening. The actress finished off the look with metallic accessories, including a sparkly clutch and pointed-toe pumps.

Cate Blanchett

Blanchett's white netted dress by Proenza Schouler, fresh off the spring 2016 runway, was stunning as she joined Moss on the red carpet at the premiere of Truth. A high, Victorian neckline and sweeping shoulder cutouts made for a modern yet elegant silhouette. With its long sleeves, Blanchett's ensemble was a textbook cold-shoulder look sure to make Clinton proud.

Alicia Vikander

At the New York Film Festival premiere of Steve Jobs, Vikander went full-on frosty shoulder (in other words, off-the-shoulder) in a raspberry-hued two-piece ensemble by Barbara Casasola. Shining gold strappy sandals and a long-strap Louis Vuitton bag finished off the ever-so-bohemian look.
