TORONTO -- The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. on Wednesday said it has hired Johnny Michel away from private Vancouver TV station Channel M to assume the newly created position of regional director for British Columbia.

The CBC, Canada's public broadcaster, has charged Michel with integrating the network's various TV, radio and new media platforms into a seamless offering, "MyCBC," once he begins the new job July 3.

"We have great talent and wonderful shows in British Columbia. The challenge is to build on our strengths, whether radio, television or digitally based, by making sure people get what they need and want, wherever and whenever they choose," said Jane Chalmers, vp for English-language radio at the CBC.

The public broadcaster also is looking to make use of increased user-generated content and interactivity and distribute more CBC content online or via mobile devices.

Michel was most recently vp of programming and production at Channel M, Vancouver's multilingual television station. Before that, he worked at CKVU Television and BCTV as well as local Vancouver TV stations.
