CBS Films is moving forward on the supernatural high school tale "Beastly," bringing on Daniel Barnz to write and helm the picture.

Based on Alex Flinn's young-adult novel, the fable centers on a popular teenage boy named Kyle Kingsbury who is turned into a hairy monster by a witch in his class.

The project, which with its teenage characters and supernatural overtones has echoes of "Twilight," is casting; producers are seeking a young hearththrob in the vein of Robert Pattinson (who played Edward in "Twilight") for the lead male role.

The Endeavor-repped Barnz, who wrote and directed the Sundance hit "Phoebe in Wonderland," is attached to pen "Under and Alone," a Southern California gang tale set up at Warner Bros.

"Beastly" was the first project put into development by Amy Baer's CBS Films, with the option of the Harper Teen book announced in December 2007. (partialdiff)
