CBS orders chef competition series

THR EXCLUSIVE

CBS is getting into the culinary reality genre with a new show that pits professional chefs against ordinary home cooks.

The network has ordered "Beat the Chefs" from Relativity Real, with Tom Forman ("Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," "Find My Family") attached as executive producer.

In the show, talented amateurs with a staff of family and friends cook their classic family recipe as top chefs make their own versions of the same dish. Judges will decide who did the best job for a cash prize.

The pilot could give CBS its first entry in the popular cooking reality genre.

Even with the success of such shows as Fox's "Hell's Kitchen" and "Kitchen Nightmares" and Bravo's "Top Chef" leading the cable entries, broadcast networks have more culinary projects in the oven. NBC is readying "America's Next Great Restaurant," and Fox is prepping "MasterChef."
