CCTV has 'Guts' to take on MTV format

Adaptation of Nickelodeon show will air this summer

HONG KONG -- MTV Networks International will see one of its formats air on Chinese television for the first time when "Tiao Zhan Xiao Yong" Shi runs on state-owned China Central Television this summer. The primetime series is an adaptation of Nickelodeon's action sports game show "Guts."

Episodes allow child contestants to live out some of their greatest sports fantasies in a competitive arena and to try out basketball, high jumping, wave pool, racing track and the show's trap-laden mountain climbing challenge.

Though foreign channels do not have the right broadcast nationally in China, MTVNI has been involved in the world's most populous country for 14 years. It launched an MTV channel in the Guangdong province in 2003 and has a growing consumer products division that supports its syndication business. Shows licensed into China include "Clarissa Knows It All," "CatDog" and "SpongeBob SquarePants."

"This next evolution of our partnership, with CCTV picking up its first-ever kids' format series, will continue to help us further strengthen our business in China," said Caroline Beaton, MTVNI's senior vp international program sales.
