Celine Dion is returning to her Caesars Palace residency in Las Vegas, after taking a year off to care for husband Rene Angelil, who was diagnosed with throat cancer for a second time.
"Rene could not talk and he could not swallow; the surgery was major," Dion told Good Morning America in an segment that aired Wednesday morning, ahead of Deborah Roberts' Nightline interview. "[At first,] I had to leave him behind because he wanted me to start the shows again. ... And I did, and it was very hard. I realized I couldn't do both."
She took a performance hiatus to care of Angelil — "I feed him three times a day; I do it myself" — and was helped by her three kids. "I really believe that children know it all — we're afraid of explaining because we're scared, because we're worried. ... I said to my children, 'You want to come and help me feed Papa today?' and [did] not make a deal out of the feeding tube."
Dion will be back onstage at the Colosseum come Aug. 27, with a new show. "The fans, they know that I'm an open book — that's the only thing I know," she said of leaving a year ago, adding of her return. "I'm doing it for him, I'm doing it for my fans, I'm doing it for me."
