Dakota Fanning, Kate Bosworth Turn Up for Chanel's L.A. Beauty Pop-Up
Kiernan Shipka, Willow Smith and Janelle Monae also showed their love for Coco at Bar Marmont.
"I'm obsessed, I want one," remarked Dakota Fanning of the neon double Cs and images of nail-polish bottles that were splashed around the walls of Bar Marmont on Thursday night. Kiernan Shipka felt likewise, taking selfies with a friend in front of the "I Love Coco" signage that adorned the entrance.
Chanel’s influence easily stretches from Paris to Hollywood, if Thursday night’s kickoff of the label’s "I Love Coco" beauty pop-up is any indication.
This showcase for two of the brand’s latest beauty launches — the Rouge Coco Stylo lip collection ($37 each) and Le Vernis Longwear Nail Colour ($28 each) — opens to the public at noon on Friday, but Thursday’s private party also drew Janelle Monae, Kate Bosworth, Gia Coppola, Willow Smith, Erin Wasson and others to check out the immersive experience, as well as a surprise performance by Swedish folk duo First Aid Kit. (Fittingly, sisters Klara and Johanna Soderberg were wearing looks from Chanel’s resort 2016 collection.)

A full week was needed to transform Chateau Marmont’s signature bar and restaurant into Chanel’s "backstage beauty lounge," as it’s been billed. Adjacent to the entrance, one room features manicurists applying the new Le Vernis colors (Bosworth was wearing Ballerina, a pale nude with overtones of pink that paired well with her slate-blue Chanel dress from the spring 2016 collection), while just beyond, makeup artists offer applications of the Rouge Coco Stylo lip colors.
In the main room, "From Coco With Love" and other temporary tattoos can be had for the asking; souvenir posters and buttons employing the hashtag #CocoLovesLA also were created for the event.
Those custom-made neon images likewise were crafted with care. Because this is a house that never does anything by half, the neon imagery replicated not just any bottle of nail polish, but a Chanel bottle, complete with font-perfect double-C insignia. "I’ve been fortunate to be invited to some of their Cruise shows, and it’s always exciting because every detail is always done at 110 percent," Fanning said.

With awards season reaching its apex this weekend, it was only fitting to ask the actresses attending "I Love Coco" about their red-carpet beauty routines. "I’m very lucky; [makeup artist] Pati Dubroff always does an amazing job," said Bosworth, who also admitted to being a devotee of Chanel lipsticks. "I absolutely love them because they’re creamy, not too dry, and they stay — that’s the holy grail of lipsticks."
Shipka, who turns 17 in November, routinely earns style points on red carpets for choices that are equal parts chic and age-appropriate, an idea that extends to her makeup talents, she said. "I go for the lip, but that’s mainly because I can’t do an eye at all — it would be there for days or maybe weeks if I tried," she joked.
Fanning, meanwhile, noted that she often does her own makeup for events, including her look for Thursday night. "I use a lot of Chanel products; they give me a lot of their new things, but I genuinely buy their beauty products even when they don’t give them to me, because I do think they’re the best,”"she said. If Fanning had to choose her favorite feature? "I’ve always gotten the most compliments on my eyes," she said. "They’re large and blue and the biggest feature on my face, so I figure I might as well enhance them."
"I Love Coco" is open between noon and 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26 through Sunday, Feb. 28, at Bar Marmont, 8171 Sunset Blvd. Reserved time slots are sold out, though a limited number of walk-in appointments will be accepted, organizers said.
