Channel 4, Traverse team for talent search

LONDON -- U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 and its standalone movie arm, Film4, have bought tickets to Edinburgh's Traverse Theater in a bid to sniff out talent and provide theater talent a chance to cross over to the big screen.

Backed by £30,000 ($60,000), the deal with the theater gives Channel 4 a first look at plays being developed by the famous Scottish capital theater company, with an eye toward potential film or TV adaptations.

Channel 4 also plans to send two young directors to work at the Traverse, giving them more exposure along with the experience of treading the boards.

To help push the new-look arts deal, the Traverse and Film4 will play host to a panel discussion. Mike Leigh and Simon Donald will be among the guests discussing the crossover between the performance arts during the Edinburgh Festival of the Arts currently underway in the city.

Leigh is one of a handful of high-profile directors who moves seamlessly between live theatrical efforts and film.
