Charlotte Olympia Shoe Designer Credits Old Hollywood for Inspiration
The cat's out of the bag: London-based designer Charlotte Dellal's Purrfect Kitty suede flat collection has touched down at The Grove's Nordstrom.
Los Angeles received a dose of Old Hollywood by way of London when Charlotte Dellal, the name behind Charlotte Olympia shoes, touched down in the City of Angels for a personal appearance at The Grove’s Nordstrom to celebrate the debut of the store’s exclusive Purrfect Kitty suede flat collection in a rainbow of shades.
“Ladies in America love a bit of color,” explained Dellal of the latest iteration of her iconic flat, which prowled into every fashionista’s closet in 2011 and has since manifested itself in a variety of hues and looks (think a red-lipped Valentine’s version and a pierced punk number). “When I love something, I tend to buy it, or make it, in every color,” she added.
As the embodiment of ’40s style -- for the occasion, she sported a cinched-waist Giambattista Valli leopoard-print dress, paired with red pumps from her classic Encore collection, and a scarlet pout in MAC’s Ruby Woo shade -- Dellal dished on her love for classic glamour , and what it’s like to explore Los Angeles in her towering shoes.
“I love Old Hollywood -- it’s the essence of the brand. So L.A. has always been in my mind for a long time,” she explained (this trip marked her fourth time in Los Angeles). “The first time I came here, I was super excited to do all those cliche things.” Topping Dellal’s list of local must-sees was a visit to the Hollywood sign and a stop at the Walk of Fame to peek at Rita Hayworth’s star (“She’s my favorite,” she mused). Dellal also never misses a chance to shop for vintage, especially hats (“My hat collection almost rivals my shoes,” she explained), so stores such as The Way We Wore made it onto her most recent shopping itinerary, not to mention staples such as Opening Ceremony and a stop at the Charlotte Olympia boutique, which opened its doors in Beverly Hills in 2013.
So where does the shoe maven rest her weary feet when in town? The Beverly Hills Hotel, which also houses her capsule collection dedicated to the property’s signature banana-leaf print, natch. Count on Dellal to always be one stylish step ahead of the pack.
