Chart glory for 'Blades' in DVD bow
EmptyParamount Home Entertainment's "Blades of Glory" skated to easy victory in its first week on DVD, topping the national home video sales and rental charts by a margin of about 2-to-1 over its closest competitor.
"Blades" was No. 1 on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart for the week ending Sept. 2, with another new release, the complete first season of the hot TV series "Heroes," from Universal Studios, debuting at No. 2.
The Will Ferrell slapstick comedy also bowed at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine's video rental chart for the week, generating an estimated $9.5 million in revenue its first week in stores. The previous week's top renter, Disney's "Wild Hogs," slipped to No. 2 with $5.1 million.
"Hogs" also gave up its top slot on the sales chart, which it had held for two weeks, to finish at No. 3, just ahead of fellow chart veterans "300," from Warner, at No. 4 and "Perfect Stranger," from Sony Pictures, at No. 5.
On the high-definition disc front, "Blades" and "Heroes" also posted a 1-2 finish on the HD DVD charts but in reverse order -- the TV show came in at No. 1. Both titles are available only on HD DVD. On the Blu-ray Disc chart, "300," from the only studio (Warner) that supports both next-generation formats, remained No. 1.
