Cher Endorses West Hollywood City Council Candidate Heidi Shink (Exclusive)
The singer will be hosting a fundraiser for the candidate on April 18.
Music icon Cher has often been outspoken when it comes to politics, and now she's putting her voice behind a candidate for West Hollywood City Council.
The singer-actress is endorsing Heidi Shink for the June 2 race for a spot on the West Hollywood City Council.
"West Hollywood has a very special place in my heart. I began my career here, playing at places like the Whisky a Go Go and the Troubadour, and I have many friends and fans who call West Hollywood home," she said in an exclusive statement to THR. "Even more importantly, this city is where my son Chaz [Bono] has chosen to live, where he feels accepted and safe. My most significant role in life is that of a mother and like any mom, I value my child's happiness above all else. That's why it is so crucial to me who is on the West Hollywood City Council and that's why this June election is so vital. I urge everyone to vote for Heidi."
In addition to her endorsement, Cher, whose hits over the years have included "I Found Someone," "Believe," "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Half Breed," also will be hosting a fundraiser for Shink on the evening of Saturday, April 18. (Tickets can be purchased here.) Cher's son, Chaz, also has voiced his support for Shink.
"I've known Heidi for 30 years," adds Cher. "I've seen her early activism in the 1980s, admired her extensive advocacy work for numerous social justice causes in the '90s and watched her develop into what she is now — a full-fledged public servant on a national, state and local level. I know the enormous integrity with which Heidi conducts her life firsthand, and it shows me how she will serve on Council. West Hollywood needs Heidi to take the City into its next great era."
Cher released her 25th studio album, Closer to the Truth, which featured the lead single "Woman's World," in late 2013.
