China Box Office: 'Godzilla' Roars to $37 Million Opening
Warner Brothers’ and Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla took a monster-size bite out of the China box office in its opening weekend. The Gareth Edwards-directed movie took $37 million from 125,000 screenings with 5.9 million admissions.
Edwards was in China to attend the premiere and also gave a talk to film students, appearing with leading Chinese director Zhang Yimou.
June is proving to be a behemoth month for China, according to data for the week to June 15 from the research group Entgroup.
Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow took $24.67 million in its first full week to bring its cume to $50.57 million, with 189,086 screenings and 4.06 million admissions, while 20th Century Fox tentpole X-Men: Days of Future Past took another $7.1 million, bringing its total take to $114.38 million after 24 days.
Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past is still the biggest Hollywood opening of the year with $39.35 million, just ahead of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which took $39.23 million in its first three days.
And Transformers: Age of Extinction and Maleficent are both still to come during the first month of summer.
Hong Kong crime thriller Overheard 3 took $5.26 million to bring its cume to $47.45 million after 18 days, from 92,710 screenings and 980,500 admissions.
Directed by Alan Mak and Felix Chong, Overheard 3 features Sean Lau, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu, who all starred in the original, as well as Ng Man-Tat, Zhou Xun, Gordon Lam and Michelle Ye.
In fifth place was the local romantic comedy Night of Adventure, which took $1.73 million in its first full week to bring its cume to $3.62 million, followed by Zhang Yimou’s Coming Home, which took another $1.22 million to bring its total to $46 million.
The Til Schweiger thriller The Guardians racked up $480,000 in its first three days.
Behind that came the domestic horror movie Midnight Hair, which earned $840,000 in its opening weekend, and domestic animated feature GG Bond 2, which took $490,000 to bring its total to $6.67 million.
Rounding out the list was another local toon: Happy Little Submarines 4 – Adventure of Octopus took $350,000 to bring its total to $7.39 million.
