Renny Harlin is set to direct an adaptation of the popular Chinese video game Legend of the Ancient Sword for fledgling studio Alibaba Pictures.
At a glitzy presentation Monday in Shanghai, the Finnish director confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that Legend is set at the studio and is in preproduction. No stars are yet attached to the project.
Harlin's latest film, the Jackie Chan-Johnny Knoxville comedy-action pic Skiptrace, recently screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival and is set to bow July 22 in Chinese theaters and Sept. 2 in North America.
Legend (Gu Jian Qi Tan) is a popular wuxia-influenced role-playing game (RPG). The concept has previously been adapted for Chinese television.
Elsewhere in the presentation, legendary Hong Kong director Peter Chan Ho-sun confirmed he has a project in development with Alibaba Pictures. Chan shied away from confirming a title or details on the upcoming film.
