Chinese Director Jin Working on Hollywood Feature Script, Pilot
"Sophie's Revenge" writer and director enlisted by Montecito/Paramount, Overbrook/Twentieth Century Fox.
BEIJING -- Eva Jin Yimeng, writer and director of China’s 2009 smash hit Sophie’s Revenge, starring Zhang Ziyi, is in Los Angeles working on both a feature film script and a television pilot for two separate major Hollywood studios.
Jin, a member of the THR Next Generation Asia class of 2009, told The Hollywood Reporter that for Montecito and Paramount she is writing a cross-cultural romantic comedy feature about meeting Chinese parents-in-law. Like Sophie, this feature will include animated elements of the lead character’s imagination, a la the U.S. TV series Ally MacBeal.
For Overbrook and Twentieth Century Fox, Jin – who authored four published books of cartoons after five years studying Italian opera and then attending film school in Florida – is writing the pilot for a television series about an American female college student-turned crime stopper on an exchange program in China.
Jin said she met Ken Stovitz of Overbrook when he was in Beijing making The Karate Kid, but that she has not yet met Will Smith: “Ken watched my movie and said he wanted to do something more in China,” said Jin, adding that her representation by CAA brought both projects to life.
