Makeup Monday: Chloe Grace Moretz's Beauty Guru Spills Her Secret Weapons
Mai Quynh dishes on her makeup must-haves at the moment.
Check out the beauty look of several Hollywood ingenues at the moment and it’s hard to miss the ethereal, painterly quality of their skin and makeup. Artist Mai Quynh is responsible for that beautifully blended aesthetic, where the hard angles of contouring and shimmery contrast of highlighting are kept to a minimum and the naturally fresh appeal of these young ladies' faces shines through in the most amazing way possible.
Quynh’s work is most recently noticeable with her client and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising star Chloe Grace Moretz, who arguably has been gifted with genetically flawless skin but has the help of her go-to makeup guru to paint those strong cheekbones and pillowy lips with flattering washes of color.
When she’s not traveling the world with her star clients (Scarlett Johansson and Amber Heard also are her regular girls), Quynh is an Los Angeles-based foodie with a penchant for quirky nail art.
Here, the makeup artist spills the secrets behind the kit that goes with her everywhere and which sunscreen she's currently loving for applying beneath makeup.
In a word (or two), how would you describe your kit?
Organized and compact.
Are there one or two brands that dominate the kit?
Too many brands to only pick two!
How long have you been building it to what it is today?
It was born in the early 2000s. Some things have been tossed, given away or migrated into the backup closet.
What made you want to become a makeup artist?
I've always been fascinated with art and painting, as well as makeup. It just made sense to me. I'm so lucky to be able to make a career out of something I love so much.
What would you consider you secret weapon?
My ability to blend. I think blending is so important for any good makeup.
Which items are you the most excited about at the moment?
La Prairie Cellular Swiss UV Protection Veil SPF 50 ($185). I think it's so important to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. This lightweight, SPF 50 absorbs quickly into the skin, without leaving any heavy, white residue. It's not greasy, so it's perfect to wear under makeup.
Beauty Blender Body Blender sponge ($28). It's important to blend your makeup on your face, as well as on your body. This Body Blender sponge allows you to apply any lightweight foundation and moisturizer to give your body a healthy glow. The sponge fits in the palm of your hand, allowing it to blend any body lotion, as well as makeup, easily into the skin.
If your makeup kit could talk, what would it say considering some of the celeb-filled glam and get-ready rooms you've been in?
Our lips are sealed.
