The Secret to Chrissy Teigen's Glowy Grammys Complexion
Her makeup artist Mary Phillips breaks it down.
No surprise here: Behind-the-scenes prep with Chrissy Teigen for Monday night's Grammy Awards was full of laughs. Says celebrity makeup artist Mary Phillips, “We always have such a fun time together — just imagine hanging out with good girlfriends and laughing a lot, except one of you is going to the Grammys.” In the process of Snapchatting and hanging out with hairstylist Jen Atkin and stylist Monica Rose, the group got Teigen ready to walk the carpet with her husband, John Legend.
Along with her white caped neoprene dress, Phillips says, “Her pregnancy was taken into consideration in the sense that it’s such a special and rare time for a woman. We didn’t want to change her; I didn’t want to put crazy colors or do a really intense graphic eye. We wanted strong while being soft and radiant.” The result was a bronze palette for her eyes with a flushed rose lip and flawless skin. “I really wanted to make the eyes pop, but in a subdued subtle smokey way,” says Phillips. “That and the skin. Skin and eyes — it’s such a classic combo.”
Phillips took lots of care when preparing the model’s complexion, using a variety of skincare formulas and even a mask before applying makeup. “Typically I wouldn’t do a mask like this the day of, but I like all the ‘stages’ it goes through — super thick, gentle and cooling, then it heats up in a warm way that draws blood to the surface for an added glow. When you take it off it acts as a gentle exfoliator,” says the makeup artist of Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque ($32), which she used on Teigen’s forehead, nose, cheeks and chin.
After that, the other products sank right into her skin. Kiehl’s Daily Reviving Concentrate ($46) and Ultra Facial Cream ($47.50) provided moisture without any grease that would interrupt the Armani foundation. To create a perfect base for the eye makeup, she gently patted on Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado ($48) around Teigen’s orbital bone. As for the softly smoky look, she used Physicians Formula Shimmer Strips Custom Enhancing Shadow & Liner, Universal Looks in Nude Eyes ($12) along with two liners for the warm, rich and elongated eye.
