Christian Borle, Andrew Rannells to Lead 'Falsettos' Cast
Stephanie J. Block will also star in the Broadway revival of the Tony-winning musical by William Finn and James Lapine, about complicated relationships in the shadow of AIDS.
Principal casting is coming together for the fall revival of Falsettos, the 1980s-set relationships musical that won Tony Awards in 1992 for William Finn's score and for the book by Finn and director James Lapine.
Christian Borle will jump directly from Something Rotten!, which won him the second of his two Tonys, into the role of Marvin in Falsettos. Andrew Rannells, the Girls regular who starred in the original cast of The Book of Mormon and was last on Broadway filling in for Jonathan Groff in Hamilton, will play Marvin's lover Whizzer. Stephanie J. Block, a Tony nominee for The Mystery of Edwin Drood, will play Marvin's wife Trina, who takes up with his shrink after her neurotic husband leaves her for a man.
The musical combines the 1981 show, March of the Falsettos, with its 1990 sequel, Falsettoland, to tell the story of Marvin and his extended family from the early '80s through the AIDS crisis years. Despite having been preceded by three off-Broadway productions over a dozen years, Falsettos became a surprise hit on Broadway, running almost 500 performances.
Lapine will again direct the revival, with choreography by Spencer Liff and scenic design by David Rockwell. Lincoln Center Theater is producing the show in association with Jujamcyn Theaters.
Falsettos will begin previews Sept. 29 at the Walter Kerr Theatre, with opening night set for Oct. 27. Additional casting is to be announced.
