'Cinderella III' a good fit atop DVD chart
EmptyScore another one for Buena Vista Home Entertainment's lucrative business of producing direct-to-video sequels to its animated classics.
"Cinderella III" topped the national DVD sales chart its first week in stores, despite heavy competition from DreamWorks/Paramount's "Flags of Our Fathers," the Clint Eastwood-helmed war drama that's up for two Oscars.
"Cinderella III" sold about 80% more copies than second-ranked "Flags," according to Nielsen VideoScan First Alert data. "Flags" did manage a first-place finish on the video rental chart for the week ending Feb. 11, generating an estimated $7.7 million in rental revenue, or 23% of its theatrical earnings.
Several other new releases also charted this week. 20th Century Fox's "Flicka," a family drama starring country superstar Tim McGraw, debuted at No. 3 on First Alert after generating $21 million at the boxoffice. The film bowed at No. 5 on Home Media Magazine's rental chart with $4.1 million, just slightly more than sixth-ranked "The Grudge 2," from Sony Pictures. The horror sequel, which grossed $39 million in theaters, debuted at No. 5 on First Alert.
Also new to the charts: Universal Studios' critically acclaimed "Hollywoodland," which brought Ben Affleck praise for his convincing performance as television's troubled "Superman." "Hollywoodland," which only mustered $14.4 million in theaters, debuted at No. 8 on both First Alert and Home Media Magazine's rental chart.
