Cinecitta to re-create the Sistine Chapel

Construction is for Nanni Moretti's film 'We Have a Pope'

ROME -- Michelangelo took four years to paint the 12,000-square-foot ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but set designers at Cinecitta Studios in Rome will be recreating the chapel in 4/5 scale in just a few weeks in what will be among the most ambitious set construction projects in Cinecitta in years.

The construction will be for Nanni Moretti's newest film project, "Habemus Papam," the Latin phrase used to announce the election of a new pope. The Sistine Chapel houses the College of Cardinals during the conclave held to elect a new pontiff after the previous one dies.

The film, which will be called "We Have a Pope" in English, is centered on the relationship between a newly elected pope and his therapist. Moretti, a five-time nominee for the Palme d'Or in Cannes, has attracted criticism from religious groups for the subject matter of the soon-to-be completed film.
