Nate Parker will receive this year's CinemaCon Breakthrough Director of the Year Award.

Parker recently made his feature directorial debut with the Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Birth of a Nation, which he also wrote, starred in and produced.

“Following its Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, Nate Parker’s The Birth of a Nation will surely bring moviegoing audiences to their feet when it is released Oct. 7,” Mitch Neuhauser, managing director of CinemaCon, said Monday in a statement. “A pure labor of love and a film that shows the true passion necessary to craft it, we are honored to present such an outstanding filmmaker with this year's CinemaCon Breakthrough Director of the Year Award.”

CinemaCon is set to be held April 11-14 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.

Parker's acting credits include The Secret Life of Bees, The Great Debaters and Beyond the Lights. He will be presented with the honor during the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards.
