Canada's Cineplex Entertainment Heads for the Cloud With UltraViolet
The Canadian exhibitor will make select Hollywood studio movies available via virtual digital lockers, for home or on-the-go streaming and downloading.
TORONTO – Cineplex Entertainment has gone to the cloud to bolster its home-entertainment offering, with the launch of UltraViolet in Canada.
The service allows the Canadian exhibition giant's CineplexStore.com customers to purchase a DVD or Blu-ray copy of a film and access a copy in a digital locker to be viewed at home or on-the-go on various digital devices.

UltraViolet, which can be shared here among six household members, launched in the US and the UK in late 2011.
Cineplex insists it’s the only movie exhibitor worldwide offering a fully cloud-based movie licensing service.
Select Hollywood studio movies in new and classic releases will be available via UltraViolet, in addition to the traditional DVD, Blu-ray, and digital rental formats.

“We believe the best way to experience a movie first is on the theater’s big screen, but when you want to see it again, UltraViolet gives you the added choice and flexibility to watch movies whenever and wherever you want,” Cineplex president and CEO Ellis Jacob said in a statement Thursday.
