Cissy Houston Pitching Book on Whitney (Report)
The late singer's grieving mother convened with publishers this week to shop the story of her daughter.
Cissy Houston is planning a book about her late daughter, Whitney Houston, The New York Times reports.
According to the paper's sources, the 78-year-old Grammy Award-winning gospel singer met with publishers in a suite at the St. Regis Hotel in New York City this week to discuss the project, referring to her daughter by her nickname, "Nippy."
“It’s going to be the bad, it’s going to be the good," Houston was quoted as saying. She characterized the book as the true story of the troubled and talented superstar, whose once-blazing career stumbled while she grappled with drug addiction and a tumultuous marriage to Bobby Brown.
The "I Will Always Love You" icon was found submerged in a bathtub at the Beverly Hilton on Feb. 11 just hours before she was scheduled to appear at Clive Davis’ annual Pre-Grammy gala. The death was ruled to be an accidental drowning, though an autopsy found cocaine in the 48-year-old’s system.
"All they know is what they hear, bad things, she’s had her ups and downs. Who hasn't?" said Cissy Houston last month, in her first TV interview since the death. "Let them think and know what they want to say … I just hope they never come and say it to me."
The Times said a deal could go for seven figures, and that Los Angeles-based literary agent Steve Fisher was looking to score global rights to the book. Also: two publishers observed that Houston, aiming to set the record straight about her daughter, seemed apprehensive about addressing the topic of the singer's drug abuse.
Houston wrote a past memoir, 1998's How Sweet the Sound, and would use a ghostwriter for the Whitney-focused project, according to the Times.
