'City Under Siege' set for holiday release

Benny Chan sci-fi actioner set for Chinese National Day 2010

HONG KONG -- Universe Films is targeting next year's Chinese National Day holidays in 2010 with sci-fi actioner "City Under Siege," a $12 million effects-heavy thriller by "Connected" director Benny Chan.

Previously titled "City on Alert," the co-production with Beijing-based Enlight Pictures, stars Aaron Kwok ("After This Our Exile") as a circus knife-thrower and "The Forbidden Kingdom" villain Collin Chou as his nemesis, after both are exposed to a mysterious gas that gives them superhuman strength. "The Transporter" temptress Shu Qi also stars as a reporter.

Special effects makeup and CG visual effects are supplied by Fat Face Productions, the Hong Kong effects house now in post-production of "Storm Warriors."

"Siege" is scheduled for September 2010 release in Hong Kong and China, coinciding with the National Day holidays that had seen huge business for past releases such as "The Banquet" (2006) and "Painted Skin" (2008). The film has been acquired for 2010 release in Singapore and Malaysia by PT Parkit.
