NINE, FOX PLAY RUGBY

Australian free-to-air channel Nine Network and pay TV broadcaster Fox Sports have acquired the Australian broadcast rights for the Rugby World Cup in 2011 and 2015. The deal, signed with the International Rugby Board, marks a fourth major sports event in which broadcast rights will be shared between a pay network and a free network here.

LACK GOES MULTIMEDIA

Bloomberg has named former NBC News president Andrew Lack CEO of its recently formed multimedia group, which houses the financial information powerhouse's expanding TV, radio and interactive operations.

B'CAST 'DETERIORATING'

UBS analyst Michael Morris warned Wednesday that broadcast advertising is "deteriorating at a rapid pace," which also will drag down TV station results at such media conglomerates as News Corp. and Disney. "Television stations in large markets have been particularly weak."

CABLE OPERATORS SOLID

Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett said Wednesday that cable operators have more solid balance sheets than investors generally assume but that the credit crunch "will still have significant implications" as borrowing costs will rise.
